DJ Format – Ill Culinary Behaviour (Genuine)
As you’ve probably guessed from the title, this track features a “kitchen” theme of sorts. Over a rather dull track produced by Format, Abdominal drops similarly dull lyrics. The overall outcome is saved a little by the funky Lord Finesse scratched refrain. A nice idea but lacking a special ingredient or two that would have made it a truly “hot dish”. On the flipside you get a bongo-laced instrumental, which features an incredibly funky guitar bassline. Overall though, there’s nothing here worth ordering from the menu.

Little Egypt – Sunrise (LE-NY)
You probably haven’t heard of these cats. You soon will. ‘Sunrise’ is the debut release from Brooklyn-based Little Egypt and on first listen shows comparisons with a certain Shao-lin based clan. Not only is the production incredibly RZA-like with its chimes and piano rolls, but squad member Taajwar sounds uncannily like Inspectah Deck as he trades verses with Visual Poetics. This is a burner. On the other two cuts on here, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Just For the Record’ we’re introduced to other members of the group, Bravestar, Forge, and Tacuma-Diop, and once again we have another two banging Wu-influenced cuts. Track down the website and pick this up.
