DJ Premier - Live In Montreal (October 2003)

Its gotta be tough being a ‘famous’ DJ at times. You work hard, build yourself and your rep up either through your performances in the clubs, or behind the boards, to the point where your fame can make you some very very good money. You should be able to take your pick of bookings based on your name, at times naming your own price that clubs and promoters need to break you off with before you’ll set foot into their DJ booth.

Sounds great huh?

But at times there’s got to be nights like this where the crowd is largely made up of know-nothing trendy fucks who are only there because YOU’RE there and its trendy to say that they were then when you were there – they know next to nothing of the music you make or play, and ignore any and all of your attempts to create any kind of vibe. At the end of the day, both parties can still be content – you still get your fat fee and bounce, and the trendies get to tell all their friends they were there and the superstar DJ was boring…

but…

that type of a night has GOT to be a killer for a DJ. The nerd inside who just wants to educate people about great music silently weeps on nights like this… on nights where everything goes wrong…

when the needles continually skip…

when the mic is overpowered by feedback…

when a Hiphop DJ gets the loudest response of the night when he drops a Nirvana record…

when every attempt at a little call-and-response interplay with the crowd is met with silence…

when the crowd has a white girl in it who has peed on herself…

  1. what’s up fam!
I just gotta say that I agree on that preemo DJ set. I’ve had this in my pc for a while and dude really tried hard to get a crowd response. But then again, being from Montreal, I can’t agree with what you said “Welcome to hell. Welcome to DJing in Montreal” as the club he went to (if I remember was the Exit) is straight up garbage. I was kinda surprised at the music direction Preemo took although, fuck it! if you know your music you can just appreciate the variety. This was a piece of shit crowd in there, I can gladly say I missed out on such a travesty.

    Peace
