Home Taping Is Killing Music Month Presents… Funkmaster Flex Live on Hot 97 (April 16, 1993)

Funkmaster Flex Live on Hot 97 (April 16, 1993)

Another from the Depth Charge double tape pile, this one came alongside a Stretch & Bobbito tape that I’ll toss up later this month.

Everyone is down on Flex these days… if its not for the whole payola cloud that continues to hover over him or his penchant for beating up women, then its the fact that he can’t mix cement or how he uses his position to whip up beef (say “Hi”, Curtis.)

Let me take you back to a happier time, when Flex wasn’t doing that fake laugh he does at rappers’ wack jokes in interviews… well not quite as much. Back when the man had some decent skills on the 1′s and 2′s, laziness had not set in, and he was packing The Tunnel every week, his Friday Night Street Jams show was ruling the airwaves – mainly because of his selections, which weren’t walking the commercial line the way they do now. Back before the wack shoe deals, the car stuff, the fawning over every rapper who has one hit… you know what I’m saying.

Here he does a decent R’n'B and Reggae set sandwiched between joints from Redman, Onyx, Run DMC and a shitload of others…

We love you old Funkmaster Flex. Please come back.
