HTIKMM: DJ Wen’s Homemade Tape Show (Part 1)

Home Taping Is Killing Music Month Presents : DJ Wen’s Homemade Tape Show (Part 1)

DJ Wen's Homemade Tape Show (Part 1)

This is definitely an exclusive that I know none of y’all will have. My boy Theo moved over to Belfast from South Central around 15 years ago, and as we shared a love of Hiphop and basketball we clicked straight away (nullus) to the point where we started DJing together and built a decent rep throughout the clubs in Northern Ireland (and I’d also spend a couple of hours on a Sunday dunking on him *pause* – obviously this was way before my knees turned to glass.) For more info on the DJing side of things, you can always read the bio on my myspace site.

What has that got to do with this post? Well Theo had a cousin back in LA called Wendell who spun on and off at various clubs in Cali at night, and cut Mack 10’s hair during the day… anyway, he used to mail tapes over to Theo at times, and whenever Theo went back to visit he returned with more audio treats. Me being the East Coast snob, quickly discovered that this was a decent way for me to get exposure to some artists that I would otherwise have thumbed my nose at. In addition, my man had some good ideas for track combinations throughout his tapes, and I used to steal the best ones and commit them to memory so that I could bust them out whenever I DJed.

As this is a relative unknown on the wheels, many will probably skip over this post (and the upcoming Part 2), but that will be your loss, as you’re missing three nice little mixtapes each day…

  1. Digging the tape rips hard. Listened to a bunch this week. Props. Its been years since I’ve heard some of these tunes and a couple have proper “oh what the fuck is that?” moments.
