Home Taping Is Killing Music Month Presents : Mark Tonderai on Radio 1
Before Westwood made it over to Radio 1, the little amount of Hiphop & R’n’B duties that the station offered were handled by a variety of people, with two of the most notable being Jeff Young and Mark Tonderai. Young’s ‘Big Beat’ and ‘National Fresh’ shows were a must-listen for the Westwood-less hordes who lived outside London, and he played some incredibly underground stuff at the time. I remember in particular when he previewed the entire “Fear Of A Black Planet” album weeks before it actually dropped, and then followed up with a great interview with Chuck D. Poor old Jeff – I have no clue what happened to him after he left Radio 1, and there’s virtually no info on the net about him.
I then stumbled across Mark Tonderai, who was doing Trevor Nelson-ish stuff way before Trev made it to Radio 1, and who had a late night show on Fridays and Saturdays that played a variety of music across the urban spectrum, but with its main focus being Hiphop and R’n’B. Tonderai used to have a guy called Damian-D in the studio each week who did a live mix, and this is what really drew me into the show – homeboy always had some nice selections during the mix, and it was always interesting to see which way he’d take his mix each week. Mark wasn’t too shabby either as a selector, and he played some fantastic tunes, that I would never have heard without his show (Titiyo’s ‘Tell Me’ and Lloyd Brown’s ‘Stress (Miserable Woman)’ being just two of many examples.)
The tapes below are all 45 minute segments of Mark Tonderai shows. I have no clue of the broadcast dates of any of them, so no point building them into 90 minute sections as I’ve done with many other shows… often one side of the tape carries a different show to the other, so for archival purposes I kept them split. Oh, and some of them will jump around a bit as I cut out ads and boring tracks every now and again.
Every one of them should carry a Damian-D mix, but I really urge you to listen from start to finish on each part – there really are some gems on these tapes.
Morbid note: For those who checked out the ‘Westwood Radio 1 debut’ post, you’ll remember me talking about the discussion on that tape surrounding the shooting of 2pac in New York which had happened right before the show. Well on Tape 2 here, right at the end you’ll hear a news report about Kurt Cobain offing himself, and on Tape 8, the lead news story of the death of Kojak. Who loves ya baby?
